Don’ t Go Bear Hunting With a Switch
Do you really need a Ghillie suit? No! And you don't really need to go hunting. And you don't really need to go paintballing. But if you're going to do these things then Ghillie suits, like your boots and your gun, can enhance the experience. If a Ghillie Suit were not a good idea for hunters, then they would never have been invented. After all, the roots of the suits lie in either Scottish gamekeepers or the poachers they were after. Seems they were hugely successful. To bad there was no photography in those days. It would be really interesting to see what the first ghillie suits looked like and compare them to our modern creations.
Of course a ghillie suit will not cure all your deficiencies. If you are pretty good at keeping yourself concealed then a ghillie will make you even better. If you are a klutz at concealment now, then a ghillie suit will not significantly change anything. Concealment is as much controlled by your attitude towards it as anything else. If you see a ghillie suit as a terrific tool that will fill in the gaps in your camouflage, then it will be well worth the money spent and the time invested in learning how to use that tool. On the other hand, if you see it as a foolish toy, then that's all it can ever possibly be for you and you would be best advised to confine your hunting to the malls . I think everyone else will be a lot safer.
For the rest of us there must be 20 or 30 really good websites selling top quality ghillie suits at more than reasonable prices. If you haven't got your ghillie yet you owe yourself the pleasure of investigating this tool that will add a lot of finesse to your woodscraft. Compared to the other tools of the task, a ghillie is just a drop in the bucket. I'm not going to suggest you give up your gun and boots for a ghillie suit. That's a pretty picture. Barefoot, in a ghillie suit, throwing rocks at a deer. Understand, a painter could paint a house with only his brush, but it goes so much better when he uses his extension poles, rollers and such. Tools of the trade. How well equipped do you want to be?
